Most people do not realize the consequences of pleading guilty to a charge, or at least to assure the ticket is free from a technicality that may have it thrown out at trial. The insurance companies may increase rates because of convictions on your record. When you choose to pay your ticket without a trial, you will be found guilty as charged, a conviction will be registered with the courts, and you are giving up your right to a trial.

Choosing to plead guilty with an explanation means you are only asking the Justice of the Peace for a minor reduction of fine. The charge(s) remain the same and the demerit points total cannot be changed. The Justice of the Peace has no jurisdiction to save your demerit points or dismiss the charge.

Please understand just because you feel you did commit the offence you were charged with, doesn't mean the Crown can prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt. Having a trial on the charge(s) against you means that the police officer, and prosecution must prove the case to a Justice of the Peace. An insurance company looks at all convictions, and your insurance rates may reflect. For example although one minor speeding ticket for traveling 10 or 20 over the limit probably wouldn't increase your rates, having a minor ticket for not having your insurance card would be considered a second conviction which very well may send your rates up.
